Local SEO is how your business shows up when people nearby search for what you do, in the Google Maps pack, in normal results and now in AI answers. This checklist covers the 20 steps that matter most in 2026.
Work through it in order. The first section alone fixes most of the problems that keep local businesses out of the map pack.
Google Business Profile (steps 1–7)

- Claim and verify your profile. Without verification, nothing else counts.
- Choose the right primary category. This is one of the strongest local ranking signals. Pick the most specific one, for example “Roofing contractor” rather than “Contractor”.
- Add secondary categories for every other service you genuinely offer.
- Fill in every field: services, service areas, opening hours, attributes and a description that says what you do and where.
- Upload real photos of your work, team, vehicles and premises, and keep adding them monthly.
- Post updates such as offers, projects and news at least twice a month.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section before customers have to ask.
Website (steps 8–13)
- Show your name, address and phone number (NAP) in the footer, exactly as on your Google profile.
- Create a page for each service, written for real customers, not stuffed with keywords.
- Create location pages for the main towns you serve, each with unique content, local projects and directions.
- Add LocalBusiness schema with your name, address, phone, hours, service area and links to your profiles.
- Make it fast and mobile-friendly. Most local searches happen on phones, often in a hurry.
- Put a click-to-call button and a short form on every page.
Reviews (steps 14–16)

- Ask every happy customer for a Google review, using a short direct link.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly.
- Encourage detail. Reviews that mention the service and the town help both rankings and trust.
Citations and links (steps 17–18)
- List your business in trusted directories for your country and industry, with consistent NAP everywhere.
- Earn local links from suppliers, local news, sponsorships, community groups and partners.
AI search (steps 19–20)
- Add an FAQ section answering local questions such as prices, call-out areas and response times, in plain answer-first sentences.
- Check AI answers monthly. Ask ChatGPT and Google AI Mode for “the best [service] in [town]” and note whether you are named.
How long does local SEO take?
Profile fixes can improve visibility within weeks. Reviews, location pages and links build up over three to six months. Consistency matters more than speed.
What is the most important local SEO factor?
A complete, active Google Business Profile with the right primary category, close to the searcher, backed by strong reviews. Your website and citations then reinforce it.
Key takeaways
- Your Google Business Profile is the foundation of local SEO.
- Service pages, location pages and schema tell Google exactly what you do and where.
- Reviews and consistent citations build the trust that wins the map pack and AI recommendations.
