How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity

How a small business gets recommended in ChatGPT and AI search

AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity recommend businesses they can clearly understand and trust. To get recommended, make your website easy for AI to read, answer real customer questions directly, and get your name mentioned on other trusted websites. Below are the 8 steps I use for my clients.

More people now ask an AI tool instead of scrolling through Google. They type “best web designer in Detroit” or “who can fix my Google Ads” into ChatGPT and get two or three names back. If your business isn’t one of those names, you’re invisible to that customer.

The good news: this isn’t magic. Most of it is good SEO done properly, plus a few new habits.

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization means making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and recommend. You’ll also see it called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AEO (answer engine optimization). I explain the terms in more detail in What is GEO?

Classic SEO tries to get you to the top of a list of blue links. AI search optimization tries to get you named inside the answer itself.

How AI tools pick which businesses to recommend

AI tools pull answers from two places. They use what they learned during training, and they search the web live. Google AI Mode and Perplexity search live every time. ChatGPT often does too.

When they search, they favor pages that:

  • answer the question clearly in the first few lines
  • come from a business that other trusted sites also mention
  • have consistent facts (name, services, location) everywhere
  • are fast, crawlable and well structured

Step 1: Let AI crawlers into your site

Check your robots.txt file. Some security plugins and hosts block AI crawlers like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended by default. If they’re blocked, AI tools can’t read your pages.

Also make sure your important pages aren’t hidden behind heavy JavaScript. If the text isn’t in the page’s HTML, many AI crawlers won’t see it.

Step 2: Answer the question in the first two sentences

AI tools love pages that get straight to the point. Start every service page and blog section with a short, direct answer, then explain.

For example, on a pricing page, write “A small business website usually costs between $1,500 and $6,000” before you explain why. That sentence is easy for AI to quote.

Step 3: Write for real questions people ask

Think about what customers actually type into ChatGPT. They ask full questions:

  • “How much does a website cost for a restaurant?”
  • “Is Google Ads worth it for a plumber?”
  • “Who is a good freelance SEO expert in the UK?”

Use those questions as headings, and answer each one in plain words.

Step 4: Add schema markup

Schema is code that tells search engines exactly what your page is about. The most useful types for small businesses are:

  • Organization or LocalBusiness: your name, logo, address, phone and social profiles
  • Person: for freelancers and consultants, so AI connects your name to your skills
  • Service: what you offer and where
  • FAQPage: your question-and-answer sections
  • Article: for blog posts, with the author’s name

On WordPress, Yoast or Rank Math can add most of this without code.

Step 5: Keep your business facts the same everywhere

AI tools cross-check facts. If your website says one phone number, your Google Business Profile says another, and your Facebook page lists old services, AI gets confused and trusts you less.

Make your name, services, location and contact details match on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook, Yelp, Clutch, Upwork and any directory you’re listed in.

Step 6: Get mentioned on other trusted websites

This is the biggest factor. AI tools recommend businesses that other sources talk about. Good ways to earn mentions:

  • reviews on Google, Clutch, Trustpilot or Upwork
  • “best of” lists and local directories
  • guest posts and podcast interviews
  • answers on Reddit and Quora (helpful, not spammy)
  • local news or industry blogs

A backlink is great, but even a plain mention of your business name helps.

Step 7: Show real experience

AI tools and Google both reward content from people who have actually done the work. Add case studies, real numbers, screenshots and your own opinion. A generic article that could be written by anyone is easy for AI to skip.

Put an author box on every post, with your name, photo, experience and links to your profiles.

Step 8: Track whether AI mentions you

Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the questions your customers ask. Note whether your business appears and which sites get cited instead. Those cited sites are where you need to be mentioned next.

In Google Analytics 4, you can also see visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai under referral traffic. If your Google clicks have dropped, read how Google AI Mode affects website traffic.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident with a security plugin
  • Long intros that hide the answer
  • Different business details on different sites
  • Publishing lots of thin AI-written posts with no real experience
  • Ignoring reviews

FAQ

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

No. You can’t pay to appear in ChatGPT’s normal answers. You get recommended by being clear, trusted and mentioned across the web.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Good SEO is the base. AI search optimization adds direct answers, schema, consistent facts and brand mentions so AI tools can quote you.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

It usually takes a few weeks to a few months, depending on how well-known your business already is. Tools that search live, like Perplexity and Google AI Mode, can pick up changes faster.

Does my small business need this?

Yes, if your customers search online. More and more of them ask AI tools first, especially for services like web design, trades and local businesses.

Do I need to block or allow AI crawlers?

Allow them if you want to be recommended. If AI tools can’t read your site, they can’t suggest you.
