I Lost a Web Design Job to AI. Here’s What AI Still Can’t Do

AI won’t replace good web designers, but it is replacing basic, template-style web design work. AI can build a decent-looking page in minutes. It still struggles with strategy, real brand thinking, conversions, SEO structure and knowing what a business actually needs. Designers who use AI as a tool will do well. Those who only sell “a pretty page” will struggle.

In October 2026, I lost a regular web design job. The agency I worked with told me they now use AI for web design and SEO. No complaints about my work. They just decided software was cheaper.

I’ve been a freelance web designer and marketer since 2018. I’m Top Rated on Upwork and have over 150 reviews on Fiverr. So this one stung. But it also made me look honestly at what AI can and can’t do. Here’s what I found.

What AI web design tools do well

I’ll be fair. AI tools are genuinely good at some things:

  • Speed: a full page layout in minutes instead of days
  • First drafts: headlines, sections and placeholder copy
  • Simple sites: one-page sites for a small event or side project
  • Code help: fixing CSS, writing small scripts, explaining errors
  • Ideas: quick layout and color options to react to

I use AI myself every day for these things. Pretending it’s useless would be dishonest.

What AI still gets wrong

Here’s where things fall apart, from what I’ve seen on real projects:

1. It doesn’t know your business. AI builds what you describe. It doesn’t ask why customers leave, what your competitors do, or which service actually makes you money. A good designer asks those questions before designing anything.

2. It looks good but doesn’t convert. A pretty page is not the same as a page that gets calls and sales. Conversion comes from clear offers, trust signals, the right calls to action and testing. That takes judgment.

3. Generic sites blend in. AI is trained on what already exists, so it produces what already exists. Many AI-built sites look almost the same. That’s bad for a brand that needs to stand out.

4. SEO is often weak. I regularly see AI-built sites with messy heading structure, thin content, missing schema, slow pages and no internal linking plan. They look finished, but Google and AI search tools struggle to understand them.

5. Someone still has to own it. Plugins break. Forms stop sending emails. Hosting goes down. Tracking stops working. AI doesn’t get a phone call at 9pm when a client’s checkout fails.

So who should use an AI website builder?

An AI builder is fine if:

  • you need a simple site fast and on a tiny budget
  • it’s a personal project, event page or test idea
  • you’re happy to manage and fix it yourself

A human designer is worth it if:

  • your website needs to bring in leads or sales
  • you want to rank on Google and get recommended in AI search
  • your brand needs to look different from competitors
  • you want someone responsible when things go wrong

How I work now

Losing that job changed how I work, for the better. I use AI to move faster on the boring parts: first drafts, code checks and research. That frees my time for the parts that make the difference: strategy, design decisions, SEO structure, conversion and looking after my clients.

Clients get the speed of AI with a real person who knows what they’re doing and is accountable for the result.

Is web design dying?

No. Basic, cheap template work is shrinking. But businesses still need websites that win customers, rank well and work reliably. If anything, the bar is higher now, because a good-looking site is easy to get. A site that actually performs is not.

FAQ

Will AI replace web designers completely?

Unlikely. AI is replacing simple, template-based work. Designers who handle strategy, conversion, SEO and ongoing support are still in demand.

Is an AI website builder good enough for a small business?

For a very simple site, sometimes. If your website needs to bring in customers, you’ll usually get better results with a designer who plans the site around your business goals.

Do web designers use AI?

Many do, including me. It speeds up drafts, code and research. The difference is knowing what to keep, what to fix and what the business actually needs.

Is web design still a good career in 2026?

Yes, if you go beyond making pages look nice. Skills like SEO, conversion, AI search optimization and marketing make a designer much harder to replace.
